Musical Inputs #1

As usual the exams are back...once again. And funnily enough, its only at this point of time that my mind begins to wander. Anyway continuing on the same lines as my last post, I'm just curious as to find out what music people are currently listening. Not that I'm running out of any(as if...) but just curious. Harry the other day kindly sent me a single from a band called flipside...which was not half bad, so i was wondering whether you people would like comment upon what music is gathering your interest and do us all a favour and pass it on. Like that song at school.
Any Genre please, not just rock or pop. Whatever catches your attention. I will listen to all songs suggested and give my personal priceless comments on each.
I'm aware that most of you people are not like me, and you guys are busy studying, but like when you guys are taking a break, alright?
And by the way (for those wondering) T.H.E.W. is a spoofish type rap song that romit ali and myself composed and recorded for other peoples listening pleasure. Please contact the above people or harry or anish or basically anyone you think who might have the song. Get your copy today!

Recently, I began my research project on hip-hop. Not hip-hop the mis-titled genre of music, but hip-hop culture itself. Dumbstruck. There's so much I didn't know. A few things I realized:
1) There's more to hip-hop than music.
2) There's more to hip-hop music than rap.
3) There's more to rap than eminem.
4) Rap success stories, I found, are a lot more stirring than their rock-based counterparts. Having delved into both worlds briefly [compared to how much all of you have, briefly seems legit to me], I find more meaning, more reality in rap. Before you lash out, pause and think about all the rap you haven't heard; trust me, there's a lot.

Rap is what opened my eyes to hip-hop culture, too. Again, this is only my opinion, but I'm beginning to feel that reality:rubbish ratio is higher in rap than in rock. That may change pretty soon what with all the pop rap springing up [Yes, TJ, pop rap exists, it sucks and so does Nelly, haha]. Then again, I'm pretty sure that I do not know enough about rock to talk. [I don't know much about anything]. Moreover, rock's about 3 decades older, so I may be wrong to compare.

I find it near-impossible to devote time to my quizzing-based rap study [sounds like rhapsody, don't it?] with the exams up in my face; but I'm trying. So here's my new lipstick. I'm sorry. my new leisure activity, my new preference: Rap.

I cant say that I dint feel anything when you spoke about the rubbish:reality ratio, but I guess i can agree with some of your statements. I do understand that sometimes rock is just non-sensical with its lyrics and all,(for those who dont understand me listen to blur's song 2)but there is more to rock than what meets the eye too. Some Rap songs may be about how guys have made it in their career, how they feel about rival gangs and "basically" or to put it simply about real stuff. Reality as you said, is more visible in rap. There is meaning in rock too though dude, sometimes even subliminal ones.
But then we should come to the point. Why do most of my friends like rock compared to rap? They think its sounds better. They don't want to listen to guy speak about his life on the rhythm of a boring 4 by 4. I guess it boils down to what appeals to you. The sound. You have to agree with me when i say that rock definately has more variety to it than rap...even if their are different genres to rap itself. People who like rap ,in my honest opinion, apart from you ashiq, are not going for the deeper meaning except to when it comes to eminem, and listen to "pop"rap.
There is lots more i can talk about but i gotta sleep, actually im refuting some of my own points fter reading through this comment! But anyway thanks for your comment Ashiq, keep me interested!
Goodnight!

Like I said in my earlier comment: "Then again, I'm pretty sure that I do not know enough about rock to talk." Those who know rock inside out, like Ali does (I think he does. Btw Ali, is that really a register?), are entitled to talk, simply because they KNOW. However, do the rock buffs know an equal amount about rap? Answer that and read on.

It's not as if I have never found meaning in rock. Hell, sometimes I feel that Bon Jovi writes for me personally, what with songs like "everyday" and "keep the faith". And I quite like 'song 2', as well. Over the years, though, my focus has kind of shifted towards lyrics rather than sound; Which is why I still hang on to Bon Jovi and Nirvana. It's also why I decided to explore the hip-hop world.

I admit, rap ain't as diverse (bio-diversity anyone?) as rock. But that's what I meant by: "Moreover, rock's about 3 decades older, so I may be wrong to compare." Rap is still in evolution. It's only reached rock's 'Led Zepp' level. Think of the 'Metallica' and beyond. Rap is recent, but the problem is, that most of rap doesn't come on TV the way rock does. Trust me, the rap that reaches TV 'tends to zero'.

All said and done, you've pretty much tied up the matter. Our friends go for rock because they like the sound. And that isn't going to change. I like the sound of rock, too, don't forget. But if they grew up with rap-loving peers, do you think they would have grown to overlook the boring "4 by 4" and sift through for some meaning. I think it's a possibility, nothing more, nothing less.

kaiser chiefs - modern way (kick ass video and song - though u might need to listen to the song twice to like it - the video made me its fan!)

rooster - away from the sun - an okay song...one of those transient types

the cardigans - love fool & live and learn - both are cool

flipside - happy birthday - kick ass song

bo bice - the real thing - pretty okay...but the best of bo is still to come!

well frankly i don't think it makes a difference what genre the music is. if u can relate to it, it works. the reason people listen to nelly and snoop dogg over people like flipside is because they're shallow. Booty and bitches is enough to satisfy them and so they listen to it. it's a shame so many get influenced by it but it's true. Artistes like Bon Jovi and Robbie williams or even eminem(most of the time! ass like that hardly counts!) write their songs about what they feel and what they hope and more importantly what it means to feel. every once in a while you will find them sing stuff like "ain't no woman like a woman in love" which is relatively shallower but i guess they need to tap into that part of their minds too.
and i don't have the time or patience to type anymore but i've discovered something incredibly mind blowingly awesome! will show or tell in school!
ciao!

The guy is Paul Anka. I'm honestly really surprised so few people know of him. He's one of the best songwriters and his song made Sinatra a hit("My Way")! Well what he did was he decided that if Robbie williams and Jamie Cullum can perform swing when they have nothing to indentify to the genre with, then well it was only right for him to give them something to identify to. So he did stuff like "it's my life" and "smells like teen spirit" and "wonderwall" IN SWING! Download it, it's brilliant!

the only thing music im into right now is richie sambora (for those who dont know, hes bon jovi's guitarist)
he has an absolutely phenomenal voice. one of the most soothing, most melodic, and at the same time very rock!
hes also theeee best guitarist in the world. (my inspiration :P).
his solo work is pretty amazing, and im hooked on to it. he has two solo albums. both with unique songs. songs with meaning, which people can relate to.
also try to get ure hands on some of his live performances, including covers of some amazing songs like 'with a little help from my friends'.
over all a brilliant musician. (belonging to the best band in the world - bon jovi!)

as for musical taste.... music is a language. as cliched as that may sound, its a comparison that is extremely relevant. just like english, or any other language, this langauge is spoken in various accents. people prefer some accents over others. for example, the british cockney accent, is one which i absolutely cannot stand!!! 'init'.. AAAAARRGGGHH!!!
and i absolutely adore the scotish and irish accent!
but in the long run the accent doesnt matter, as long as wat is said makes sense and holds meaning.
so when it comes to the language of music, peolpe also prefer certain genres/accents, to others. but the value of a song is based entirely on the person listening to it. a person can find any song from any genre amazing,(even if that particular genre is not wat he prefers over others), as long as he/she relates to it, and/or it appeals to him in any way!

well thats my interpretation anyway! hope it makes sense.

bon jovi rules.
